The twenty-two team Michigan Girls High School Hockey League kicked off league play Wednesday night and one of the first match-ups saw the Walled Lake Wild blow into Eddie Edgar Arena in Livonia to take on the Livonia United squad in a Division 2 match-up which saw Livonia take down Walled Lake 1-0.
“They had some good shots, some chemistry together and some things we can build on.” Livonia United coach Janine Martinez stated afterwards. “It is a long season so I think we are off on the right foot.”
Defense took center stage as both teams remained scoreless until the 4:19 left in the second period. A Wild turnover allowed Aubree Conte to take the puck into Wild zone and bury it in the back of the net for the lone score of the evening.
In talking about her defense, Martinez talked about the need to make sure her girls gapped up and didn’t overcommit. “We don’t want to get those odd man rushes and breakaways”.
Coming off of a 13-11 season last year, Wild coach Kyle Soncrainte was happy with his teams performance even if they didn’t come out on top in the scoring column. “(We) were really positive on the defensive side working together as a team. They have a good step ahead of them and I’m really happy about where they showed up for the first game.
The victory puts Livonia United at 1-0 on the young season with a match-up back at Eddie Edgar against Washtenaw United on November 9th, while Walled Lake starts the season at 0-1 and plays Grosse Point North on November 14th at East Side Foundation Hockey Arena in Detroit.
